Why is it so important to authenticate?

If a Zoom session for a remote lecture relies on using TBL groups or assigned group membership for small group activities, participants of the meeting must be authenticated by their UIC netid and password (also called Single Sign On or SSO) with Zoom. With our large number of students, it is very challenging and time consuming to manually assign users to a specific group within Zoom at the time of the meeting. Therefore, we rely on the “preassign breakout groups” function of Zoom to create the groups before the session is started. In order for this to work, every user in the meeting must be logged in to their Zoom app using SSO to join the meeting, including students. Authentication also adds an additional layer of security to the meeting since only people who are part of the UIC Zoom domain are allowed to join.
